Wisconsin Native Soft Landing Kits
- Preorder 2026 Kits -

Support pollinators and restore Wisconsin’s natural landscapes with a Wisconsin Native Pollinator Kit from Little Sweet Flower Farm.

A soft landing is a gentle planting underneath a tree that gives caterpillars, moths, and other insects a safe place to complete their life cycles.

Many caterpillars feed on native trees, but they do not stay on the tree where they hatch. When they are ready to pupate, they drop to the ground.

If that ground is turf grass, bare soil, or heavily cleaned mulch, they often do not survive.

A soft landing uses low native plants and sedges, along with leaf litter and natural structure, to create a protected space beneath the tree.

This practice is especially powerful when planted beneath native keystone trees such as Oak, which support hundreds of species of caterpillars and other insects. Other native trees like Maple and Birch can also provide important habitat and food for wildlife.

Keystone trees provide the food for caterpillars, while the soft landing below provides the shelter they need to finish their life cycle. Together, they help rebuild the natural relationship between trees, insects, birds, and the landscape.
