Wisconsin Native Plant & Ephemeral
Build Your Own Kits

Choose the Build Your Own Kit that fits your space, and let Little Sweet Flower Farm help you support pollinators and protect Wisconsin’s natural landscapes.

Native Plant Kits

Native plants are species that naturally occur in a region and have evolved alongside local wildlife, pollinators, and ecosystems.

Our Build Your Own Native Plant Kit lets you select the flowers, host plants, and native grasses or sedges that fit your space. Every species is a true Wisconsin native, helping you create a pollinator-friendly garden that blooms from spring through fall.

Because they evolved together, native plants provide the most beneficial nectar, pollen, and habitat for local pollinators and wildlife.

When selecting pollinator plants, here are some helpful hints to keep in mind:

  • Plant in groups of 3 or more to increase pollination efficiency.

  • Plant with bloom season in mind. Pollinators need a consistent food source from early spring through fall.

  • Create diversity in your garden. Flowers with different colors, shapes, heights, fragrances, and bloom schedules attract a wider variety of pollinators.

  • Group plantings together. Larger patches of flowers allow pollinators to move safely and efficiently while foraging.

  • Provide host plants. Many butterflies and moths rely on specific native plants for their larvae to develop.

  • Include some native sedges and grasses. Sedges and grasses add structure, create habitat for pollinators, stabilize soil, and provide food and shelter for other wildlife.

Spring Ephemerals Kits

Spring ephemerals are woodland plants that emerge, bloom, and set seed early in the season before the tree canopy fills in.

Our Build Your Own Ephemeral Kit lets you choose the woodland plants that fit your space and your goals. Every species is a true Wisconsin native. These early blooms provide important nectar and pollen for the first pollinators of the season, including emerging native bees.

When planting ephemerals, keep these things in mind:

  • Plant beneath deciduous trees or woodland edges. Ephemerals thrive where they receive sunlight in early spring and shade in summer.

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally. After blooming, leaves continue gathering energy that is stored underground for next year’s growth.

  • Avoid disturbing the soil once planted. Many ephemerals grow from delicate rhizomes and establish best when left undisturbed.

  • Plant in natural clusters or drifts. Ephemerals grow and look best when planted in loose groupings that mimic natural woodland settings.

  • Leave leaf litter in place. Fallen leaves help retain moisture, protect the soil, and recreate the woodland conditions these plants evolved in.

  • Plan for what grows after. Because ephemerals go dormant by early summer, they pair well with later emerging woodland plants like ferns, sedges, grasses, and shade-loving natives.
